Consumers Buy What They Buy

Recently I received an email from John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing, asking me what will be the key in the upcoming year when it comes to small businesses. If you don’t know John I must say you may be missing out on one the most influential small business gurus there is. I’ve had the opportunity to sit across from John and share a cup of coffee, review his material on referral marketing and evaluate his marketing plan software. He always pushes out the most useful material that honestly I look forward to each and every one of his marketing initiatives that he puts out to the public. Ok, enough about John, but seriously if you haven’t heard of him you may just want to check him out.

Ok, back to his request. My response was:

“This will be the year for small businesses to recognize the behavior of consumers to effectively market; advertising is no longer enough without understanding the “why” behind the purchase.”

I must admit this was my second response, at first I was drawn to social media, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that really social media is about understanding consumers and relating to them in a way that they understand. It’s no longer enough to market and advertise, it’s crucial to create those relationships that matter to our consumers. How do we do that?We take the time to listen to them and to identify their needs.

We then present

  1. We then present our products or services in a way that genuinely fulfills their needs. Cut out the hype – sell what works and you’ll never have to hunt down new customers again
  2. Stand behind your products and services. If you don’t you’ll not only lose the customers you have, but you’ll deplete the chances of acquiring new customers.
  3. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Wow, if we would all do this a little more, our integrity would increase and so would our bottom-line.
  4. Create that emotional connection with your customers, the kind that creates customer loyalty not just repeat-buying. If you don’t touch them emotionally why should they return and why should they be loyal to you?
If you can follow these five things proactively, I guarantee you that your business will grow. If you choose to ignore them you may very well be out of business come next year. Creating relationships with your customers and understanding the “why” behind the purchase really is that important.

Best, Inexpensive Ways to Advertise Your Business

Most companies are looking for the best, inexpensive ways to advertise because they don’t have millions, or even thousands, to spend on advertising. Make the most out of the ad dollars you do have, no matter how limited you are. These cheap ways to advertise give you a variety of options to choose from when you’re on an ad budget diet while giving you a good return on your advertising investment:
Create a Flyer
Creating your own flyer to advertise your business is simple, inexpensive and it’s a great way to generate buzz about your company. If you really want to make your flyer an effective advertising tool, offer incentives or discounts to people who bring in your flyer. This also gives you an informal way to track how many people are coming in just because they saw your flyer.
Advertise on Cable
Wait! Before your eyes skip over this section, thinking it’s just for those who can afford a TV commercial, keep reading. You can advertise on cable through crawls, full screen ads and above program listings. These alternative advertising methods are very affordable. Crawls can cost under $10 a day.

10. Alienware M14Xz

1020 10 Best Laptops To Buy in 2011

This is considered to be one of the unique laptops out there because of the “Alien” concept it carries. Build is far comparable from its competition, displaying both the sturdiness beyond its material, lightness that is contrasting to its looks, and curves that can only be compared to extraterrestrial vessels and stealth crafts. Design is beyond what can be seen anywhere else in the world. It is actually like handling and buying something that is out of this world. Graphics are very crisp and clear, even though 1600×900 is not the best there is. Its fast processor can startup everything in only 45 seconds, even with no tweaking on startup options.

9. Samsung Series 9 NP900X3A

0919 10 Best Laptops To Buy in 2011

A very thin laptop that has all the goodies included, the Samsung Series 9 is a good choice of something small that is loaded with bigger specs, such as a powerful Intel Core i5, an 8GB memory, and a graphics unit that is worth the purchase and the combination. This is, in fact, one of those ultrathin laptops available in the industry. It may be comparable to the MacBook Air as it is small and light, but it falls short on the price as it is quite expensive for something that is not even at par with what the New MacBook Air can offer. It actually comes close even to the HDD space, being SSD, just like its Apple competitor.

Display: 13.3” TFT 1366 x 768 pixels
Storage: 128 GB Solid State Drive
Processor: Intel Core i5-2537M 1.4 GHz

What does it take to succeed? Apparently a whole lot of failure. Paul Tough, in the New York Times, reports educational leaders who believe that knowing how to fail is the secret to success. Dominic Randolph, who leads an expensive, top ranked private school in New York City, is concerned about students that have known nothing but success. He states:

Whether it’s the pioneer in the Conestoga wagon or someone coming here in the 1920s from southern Italy, there was this idea in America that if you worked hard and you showed real grit, that you could be successful. Strangely, we’ve now forgotten that. People who have an easy time of things, who get 800s on their SAT’s, I worry that those people get feedback that everything they’re doing is great. And I think as a result, we are actually setting them up for long-term failure. When that person suddenly has to face up to a difficult moment, then I think they’re screwed, to be honest. I don’t think they’ve grown the capacities to be able to handle that.

Apple’s in no hurry to release iPad 3, says industry analyst

With no competition in the tablet world, Apple’s unlikely to release the iPad 3 until 2012, reports J.P. Morgan analyst.

Apple isn’t feeling any pressure to release the next generation of iPad — especially since there’s no near competitor at this point.

That’s the word from analyst Mark Moskowitz with J.P. Morgan, who reported that his conversations with industry insiders indicate that the iPad 3 won’t hit shelves until 2012 due to the lack of competition, among other factors.

While a report last month indicated that issues with the high-definition “Retina” display pushed back the release date for the iPad 3, Moskowitz said the schedule is less tech-related and more competition-related. Without a clear second-place tablet in the market, he and fellow industry analysts say the Cupertino company’s feeling no pressure to push out the next iPad.

“In our view, Apple should be in no rush,” he said. “The other tablet entrants have stumbled so far, and that trend-line could persist deep into 2012.”

 New Start

Increasing numbers of people are coming to realize that corporate America has changed: job security is largely a relic, benefits are not nearly what they used to be, and starting their own business is looking a lot less risky. If you are among them, there are seven key steps to getting your business started.

1. Make Sure Entrepreneurship Is What You Really Want
If you are thinking of starting a business because you lost your job and are having trouble finding a new one, then think about doing a better job search. Hire a career coach or get some training. Starting a business is much harder than getting a job, so it’s worth the extra effort to look for employment in a better way, if that’s your true preference. Also, think about whether you have what it takes to start a business in these terms: No one will tell you what to do (except your customers). You have to be self-motivated, willing to make many sacrifices, and be able to last for the long term while your business goes from startup to maturity.
2. Decide What Kind of Business You Want
Franchise or independent? Service or manufacturing? Brick-and-mortal retail or online? Consumer or business-to-business? There are dozens of different types of businesses, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. Like to work with the public? A retail store might be right for you, but you will face the tradeoff of having a lot of overhead (rent and utilities for example). Want to keep your business small with low overhead, and sell your expertise? Being a consultant might suit you, but there are only 24 hours in a day and that could limit your income.
